Sometime during the summer the heat wave that hit Europe started receding. Some posts celebrated the arrival of autumn one month before time.
I knew it wasn't autumn. My nose knows when autumn arrives.
Every year, on September 19 or 20, I get up in the morning and I get the unmistakeable smell that signals that autumn has arrived. It's uncanny just how marked this specific scent comes during this season and only this season.
If I were asked what my favorite smell is (is it a weird question to ask?) I would certainly have to say it's the smell of autumn.
It smells like leisurely days, it smells like Christmas is approaching (I am not a christian, but I was a kid once, thus I have fond memories of Christmas), it smells like cooler weather and Dia de Muertos (though it's really the CempasĂșchil (I think it's called marigolds in english) that really smells like Dia de Muertos).
I used to think it was just my imagination, but I've noticed it, year after year, that overnight, just before the autumn equinox, this specific, unmistakeable scent reaches my nose: it's autumn.
It makes the sunny days a lot more bearable, it makes the mornings extra comfy, it goes well with coffee and tea. I highly recommend it.
Most people I've asked say autumn is their favorite season. Maybe I ask people who will answer that specific question, as I tend to surround myself with people with a similar temperament as mine.
Happy autumn, gente!
